Meet Bob Bloh

I was born in Giddings, Texas on July the 24th of 1938, and attended school there until eighth grade. At that time I moved to Fayetteville, North Carolina. I went to college at Lenoir-Rhyne College in Hickory, North Carolina, where I got an A.B. Degree in Business Administration and an A.B. Degree in Spanish.

(There is a chuckle at this.) Don't ask me why. At one time, I had considered going overseas to work, that sort of thing... anyway, Lenoir-Rhyne had a highly respected business department as well as a very good athletic program. Golf was my main sport and I helped get a golf team started at Lenoir-Rhyne, and we had a good time with that. Later on, I was encouraged to go to graduate school, and I got into the MBA program at Carolina. While at Carolina, I had joined the Army, which in those days was six months active duty, and six years in the Reserves. After graduation, they activated my unit, and I ended up spending about two years at Fort Bragg... basically packing parachutes."

When I finally got away from there, I went to work for Esso, in Charlotte, North Carolina. I left there to work for United Brokers, Inc., in the casualty department. We wrote a lot of automobile, mobile home, motorcycle coverage, that sort of thing. In July of 1977, I went to work for Mid-South Insurance Company. My position was Vice President for Group Operations. I went to the American Institute of Management-Services in 1984 and I joined the staff at Group U.S. on December 13, 1989.

Bob had worked with Group U.S. during his days at Mid-South. I found Group U.S. to be very loyal, both to the carriers and the brokers that worked with them. Group U.S. always supported us, we never had to concern ourselves whether or not we would get every bit of cooperation. They were very fair. They always tried to balance themselves between the company, the carriers, and the brokers in charge. So in the end, everyone was happy with the results.

When asked what he liked best about Group U.S., Bob responded, In my previous positions, I was severely limited. We normally had one product and went after one segment of the market. At Group U.S., we have nearly unlimited products, and target a much broader market.

Bob was asked to list five words that describe his values: Loyal. Sincere. Helpful. Trustworthy. Supportive." The most important thing, he said, was to be worthy of trust. You've got to be able to depend on people, and people have to be able to depend on you. That's one thing that Group U.S. is very good about. We always try to do everybody right.
